Kalispell is a city located in northwestern Montana. It is positioned in Flathead County and serves as the seat of government. Kalispell is the largest city in Flathead County and the 7th largest city in Montana. As of 2016, there were almost 23,000 people living in Kalispell according to the United States Census Bureau.
Kalispell was constructed to serve as a division point for the Great Northern Railway that operated from St. Paul, Minnesota to Seattle, Washington. The city was platted in 1891. By 1904, the railway relocated the main line north of Kalispell and established Whitefish as the new division point. Despite the relocation, Kalispell continued to prosper. Today, Kalispell is a dynamic community surrounded by beautiful mountains. The city is located near Whitefish Mountain Ski Resort, Glacier National Park, and several National and State forests and parks. Also, the city serves as the historical hub of the valley. Several museums that tell of the Kalispell’s historic past are located in the city. Kalispell is host to concerts, art fairs, and festivals that take place in the area. Kalispell is located in a climate that experiences warm summers and very cool winters. Throughout the months of June, July, and August, daytime temperatures vary from the upper-70s to low-80s on average. At night, temperatures will dip into the 50s. During the winter season, daytime temperatures average in the low and mid-30s. Residents of the city find it necessary to have both heating and cooling systems installed in their homes.
