Bigfork, Montana is a town positioned in Flathead County. The county is located in northwestern Montana and is the 4th largest county in the state. Bigfork is one of the smaller communities in Flathead County. As of 2010, there were approximately 4,270 people living in Bigfork according to the United States Census Bureau.
Bigfork is located in an area that was originally inhabited by Native American Indians. The site of Bigfork was used as a gathering place for the native tribes. These individuals gathered here because of the abundant natural resources found in the area. In 1899, Everit L. Sliter arrived and platted Bigfork two years later. It is said the town is named Bigfork because of the nearby Swan River being a "big fork" within the Flathead River system.
